VON ARA is a Cape Town jewellery studio led by artist Lara Landsberg, where each piece begins with a personal story. The website was built to feel less like an online catalogue and more like a gallery — a quiet, editorial space where the work, the maker and the meaning behind each piece can breathe.

The brief sat on a simple tension: the work itself is emotional and highly crafted, while e-commerce tends to flatten that into grids and prices. I designed the site so the story leads — opening on a full-screen, black-and-white portrait of a piece being worn, with the brand's own words carrying the headline, so the first impression is mood and meaning rather than product listings.

The visual direction is deliberately restrained. High-contrast monochrome photography does the heavy lifting, set against generous white space and a deep teal accent that runs through the utility bar and footer. A high-contrast serif, used in both roman and italic, gives the page its editorial voice, while uppercase, wide-tracked sans-serif handles navigation and labels. Buttons are soft pills in solid and outlined treatments, so the primary action always reads clearly without shouting.

The shop is structured around named collections — ARA, KAI, KYA and ENSO — each with its own short character line and a transparent 'from' price, filterable by rings, earrings and necklaces. That structure keeps browsing effortless while presenting the range as a curated edit rather than a stock list.

Bespoke work is the heart of the studio, so it was given the most room. A filterable commission gallery leads into individual story pages for each piece — the inherited wedding band that became a new ring, a date carried forward, a promise made visible — with the maker's process laid out as a four-step ritual from conversation to final piece. For a made-to-order business, those pages do the persuading a product listing never could.

The build also covers the practical layer a bespoke studio needs: made-to-order messaging, insured courier delivery across South Africa and worldwide, care and FAQ guidance, a founder page that grounds the brand in Lara's training and family history, and a newsletter signup that keeps past collectors in the story. The result is a site that behaves like a proper studio presence — commercially complete, but never at the cost of the quiet, considered tone the work deserves.
